Healing is More Than Physical

I have a friend who recently confessed she has an autoimmune disorder. She hesitated to reveal this to people as she makes a career of helping people heal and improve their diets and has been a shining example of what living the Almost Vegan life will do for you. However, she bravely chose to reveal this in hopes that people would realize that her diet actually prevented her from subcumming to this disease earlier. You can read Amber's story HERE.

I can completely relate to this, as recently my health took a downturn, and I too, promote healthy living as a way to heal. However, as I've said many times, healing is physical, emotional and spiritual, and without balancing all three, illness will creep it's way in. Eating healthy and getting exercise is fantastic and will no doubt keep you healthy for a long time. Eventually though, if the underlying issues that caused you to be unhealhty in the first place are not addressed, at some point you will experience health issues again.

Therefore, I have decided to create a series of posts on the emotional and spiritual tools for getting healthy. This is where I'm at in my journey right now as well. I've been great at eating right, but when it comes to the other stuff it's been a challenge for me. I'll be discussing:

  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
  • Louise Hays "You Can Heal Your Life"
  • Meditation
  • The Violet Flame
  • Energy Healing Techniques
  • QiGong
  • Prayer
  • Visualization
  • Creativity
  • Tuning Forks
  • The Healing Codes
and so much more!!!

My Cancer Journey

Seven years ago this summer a lump in my neck turned out to be Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system. I like to joke to people that on Monday of that week, I received a promotion at work making me the General Manger of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. On Thursday I signed the papers for my first home, and on Friday, I was diagnosed with cancer. It's not really funny, but amazing to me that so many life changing situations happened literally at once.

When I found out my diagnosis, I was relieved. I had been suffering from severe depression, to the point of suicide and had prayed that something would happen to take me from this world. I felt like I got my wish. A few weeks after my initial diagnosis, I had an appointment with an oncologist, who discovered the cancer had spread to both sides of my neck and down through my chest. This is highly unusual, and at the time I believed it happened because I wanted to die. Why I still think that may have been a part of it, I've recently learned a bit more about cancer and it's possible the biopsy they did actually cause the cancer to spread. You can read more about this in my previous post, What Your Oncologist Never Told You About Cancer.

My parents were of course extremely concerned; my Dad's reaction to the news is the reason I initially decided to live instead of letting it take me. I told my doctor I would not be going through chemo or radiation and she told me I wouldn't make it to the holidays. Seven years ago. Never allow the doctors to scare you with a death deadline, you create your own destiny.

Once making the decision to heal holistically, I checked out every book, blog, dvd, etc. that related to healing cancer. I believe that any disease, is an imbalance in the physical, emotional and spiritual bodies. Most western medicines only focus on the physical, and most of the time the symptoms rather than the actual cause. I started out by changing my diet, going on a strict vegan raw food diet for the first year. I lost over 100lbs, and completely stopped the spread of cancer. I also did some emotional healing. Check out my post on Healing With Energy Psychology for more info on this.

After a couple of years, things remained stable, and I got frustrated. I fell off the wagon, started eating junk again, ignored the emotional work, hadn't even acknowledged the spiritual work, and dove into work. I worked a lot of hours and had the weight of the world on my shoulders. In the Spring of 2009, I started having a lot of fatigue issues. I went in for my tests, and the cancer had spread like wildfire. I had cancer in my lungs, under my arms, kidney, etc. Everything on my blood tests was off the charts bad, my organs had started to shutdown, and this time my Naturopath, who normally is very supportive, told me there was nothing more to be done and to put my affairs in order, it would only be a matter of weeks. I realized at this point I couldn't jack around anymore. I had to make a choice: live or die, and that choice had to be mine. I couldn't do it for my Dad or anyone else, it had to be for me. I took a couple weeks off of work, ate lots of veggies, spent a lot of time in bed, because by this time I could barely move, and decided that I really hadn't given life a proper chance. So I made my choice.

Two years later and obviously I chose to live. This time, instead of focusing mostly on the physical and half-hearted with the emotional, I have undergone entire lifestyle changes. Physically I got back into a healthy diet, focusing on Green Smoothies. I incorporated Superfoods into my diet, reversing many of the poor results on my blood tests. Triton, my furry 142lbs newfoundland/great dane mix got my booty shaking with daily walks. I also bounce on a rebounder, and started getting into yoga. I detox my body daily by skin brushing, make regular colonics appointments, etc. I got certified in Reiki, an energy healing tool, and receive other energy healing from my Mom. You can read about how one of the tumors in my neck shrank in under 15 minutes with several witnesses in my post Healing With Tuning Fork Sound Therapy.

Emotionally, I started doing mirror exercises, reading Louise Hay, using EFT (emotional freedom technique) to release the emotional causes of my cancer, forgiveness exercises and much more. Spiritually I recognized my connection with the Universe, meditate daily, and next week will embark on a Spiritual journey as I fly to Oregon for a Vipssanna Meditation retreat.

So how am I doing? Tumors in my armpits are breaking into pieces. The primary tumor in my neck split into two, and once piece is shrinking, while the other is slowly pushing itself out of my body. Whoa! My energy levels are up, I am still anemic, but I did go up a point on my latest blood test. I'm healing, and with a little more work and a lot of faith, I plan on ending 2011 completely healthy and free of cancer, eczema, anemia and hormone imbalances.

The things mentioned are just a few of the healing tools I have used, but the ones I found most effective. Once I return from Oregon, I will get updated tests, and I intend to kickstart a new healing program. More on this later.

What do you do to stay healthy? Have you ever faced a major disease? How did you handle it?

EFT in Review

Last weekend I took an EFT class at my Mother's house. I had done a one on one class with her a few years ago, which, incredible! I laughed, cried, danced, had visions; serious emotional release. This past weekend I attended a class with three other ladies, all who experienced amazing changes during our afternoon. Not familiar with EFT? Here's a blurb written by the lady herself, my healer-Mom, Rhonda.

EFT is often referred to as emotional acupuncture only without the needles.
The theory behind EFT is that unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pain and disease. EFT is a simple, fast way to clear out the emotions that are disrupting your body’s energies by gently tapping on acupuncture points while focusing on your specific physical or emotional problem. It has been found to be amazingly effective for providing relief from phobias, fears, addictions, and an extraordinary range of problems. With EFT you can release the emotions surrounding major traumas without having to relive them. Often you can experience relief in a single session as opposed to months or even years of "talk therapy."
Almost anyone can quickly learn to release the stuck emotions that prevent them from experiencing health and happiness and achieving their goals in life. Many amazing results have been achieved by using EFT with children and pets. You can use EFT for just about everything from the common cold to cancer, and you use the same basic procedure for relieving a fear of public speaking as you do for improving your golf score or reducing pain. You can learn to tap away a bad mood, the pain in your back, or a craving for chocolate in just minutes!

Cool! In our class, we learned the basic tapping points, phrase options, the Choices Method, the Movie method, and much more. One lady had chronic pain issues, and since our class, she has not experienced any pain! Isn't that amazing? Now, I will say that some issues may take a little more effort. For instance, if you were robbed at gunpoint, you may have to tap through the experience several times to release. Why? It's like peeling the layers of an onion. You were probably frightened by the experience, angered, experienced loss, violated. You may be experiencing after effects, such as fear of going out in public (if that's where it occurred), fear of strangers, etc. Forgiveness is also important, and it's always a good idea to clear difficult situations with a forgiveness release. However, each round of tapping will reduce the emotional connection to the experience, making it easier and easier to think about, until at some point you can think of the experience without experiencing strong emotion. Then, you have released it. I have used EFT to eliminate headaches, release emotions surrounding the failing health of my Grandma, issues pertaining to my cancer, depression, food inhibitions, etc. Here's a video from my second favorite EFT guru, Brad Yates

EFT is a great tool for releasing emotional blockages, curing allergies, and can even help deal with behavioral problems with your pets! Here are a few of my favorite links:

Best of Existing's Tricky 2010

I can't believe it's been eight months since I started this blog.  Here is a list of personal favorite posts of 2010!

The Ego's job is to create fear and control, but sometimes a book or experience, quote, or friend can help us kick that Ego to the curb and get in touch with our inner guidance system. The message I received will enable me to kick this healing into high gear.

Drug companies push dangerous shots that contain mercury and other nastiness. A few simple holistic remedies will help you maintain health, even through the winter flu season.

One of the biggest questions I am asked is "How do you get your protein if you are not eating meat? There are many sources of protein for vegetarians, including nuts, seeds and dark leafy vegetables. This article also covers which items are a complete source of protein, meaning they contain all essential amino acids.

This is one of the most important lessons I've learned this year. I've experience so much healing by using this simple tool. I know it will help you as well.

Louise Hay is a brilliant woman who healed her own cancer through the use of affirmations.

Most people have the desire to improve their health, increase happiness and live better lives. However, most efforts fail because they don't know the steps to successfully implement change in their lives. Read, print, and follow these steps to create a healthier you.

This tool has been tremendous in opening myself to others. Often times those who affect us the most, are the ones we need to pay the most attention to. They are a reflection of something inside ourselves.

This three-part article details 17 different Superfoods that personally healed my issues with anemia, hypoglycemia, hormone imbalance, and have reduced the inflammation in my system, which in turn has reduced the cancer. This is one of the most important sources of information I've ever received.

I resisted, dug my heels in, crossed my arms, and shouted "I don't wanna" in my little kid voice, year after year.  This year I finally relented, and realized what a beautiful gift Reiki is. This is my story.

It is so difficult to explain diet and lifestyle changes to our loved ones. Often times people become defensive, and in turn, we can have a superior attitude. This list of tips will help you co-exist with those still on a SAD (Standard American Diet).

I have been using the Law of Attraction for a few years now and I'm telling you, it works.  This is a list of my favorite tools to aid you in implementing the Law in your life.

I have used many different energy psychology techniques.  In this article I discuss some of my earliest successes, which have lead to incredible healing.

Kris Carr originally posted this challenge on her blog CrazySexyLife.  In this article I provide tips on reducing TV in your life, how to fill in all the extra time, and challenge you to take a 30 day break from the boob tube.

In Gabrielle Bernstein's wonderful book Add More ~Ing to Your Life: The Hip Guide to Happiness, she discusses how we sometimes make our intimate relationships "special", which can lessen our own loving relationship with ourselves.

Self love is so important.  Enjoy this beautiful post filled with tips, quotes and pictures to help you create a loving relationship with your self.

Comment, re-post, sign up to be a follower and spread the word! Thank you for a wonderful 2010, let's start 2011 off with a BANG!!

I'm a Reiki Gal Now!

A few weeks ago I finished my Reiki Level II class.  It's taken me awhile to absorb everything I've experienced and piece together the best way to represent Reiki to you.  I took the first level several months ago, and learned the basics on how to feel energy and direct it to heal myself and others.  Unfortunately, I went to that class on less than an hour of sleep, after a night of puking my guts out, so I didn't have the focus I wish I had.  I did do some Reiki on myself for a few weeks after the class, and then promptly forgot all about it until the Level II class came up.  This time, I came mentally and physically prepared to soak it all in.  Wow, what an incredible and moving experience.  And in some ways terrifying, learning things about myself that I didn't want to admit, not necessarily bad things, but a change is coming, and that's always a tad bit scary.

So what is this Reiki nonsense anyway?  I've made mention of various energy healing modalities, EFT, Reiki, Resonance Repatterning, etc., but I'm not sure I've really explained it, and I'm not going to. Just kidding, sort of.  My Mother started down the Energy Healer path about 14 years ago, and has blossomed.  She's a healing guru, a superhero of energy medicine, and a kick ass woman.  She recently wrote a really great blurb on energy healing (which is what Reiki is) and I'd like to share that with you here.

Written by Rhonda Sandmoen
I am an Energy Healer, which means I practice Vibrational Medicine…an umbrella term for a myriad of energy techniques that heal more than just physical symptoms. I know that to some people “Energy Healing” or “Vibrational Medicine” may sound like some weird “new age” thing but in reality it is an ancient method of healing that is now being supported by the modern sciences of Quantum Physics, Biogenetics, and Noetics.
According to these sciences, we are vibrational beings living in a vibrational universe where everything is energy, including thoughts, emotions, and us. Whenever we are sick it is because our energies are out of balance and not flowing properly. Pain and disease are both the symptom and the result of imbalanced energy. Since we are energetic beings and our unbalanced energies make us sick, then it follows that balancing our energies makes us well.
This is where Energy Healing enters the equation. If you were low on blood you would have a blood transfusion, if you are low on energy you need an energy transfusion! The major part of the rest of the world has understood this for thousands of years...think of Acupuncture, Qi Gong, Aromatherapy, Massage, etc. Here in the west where the drug companies rule we are conditioned to believe that we need drugs to be well, when in truth drugs only treat the symptoms of disease while creating even more energy imbalances. Drugs can’t heal the emotional and spiritual problems that are the underlying cause of illness; with energy healing you can awaken your inner healer and heal yourself!
Vibrational medicine supports and strengthens your immune system, eases your stress, heals your emotional wounds, eliminates pain, and improves your overall physical health, energy, and vitality. When your energies are strengthened and balanced you feel relaxed, have more clarity of mind, are more inspired, creative, and tuned into your inner guidance...these are the “side effects” of energy healing!
A good energy healer has a natural ability for the healing arts that allows her to feel or see energy, she (or he) is tuned into their inner guidance, has had years of training, and knows that she is merely the facilitator for healing, not the source.

Isn't she brilliant? Check her out at Awakening Wellness for more info on energy healing, to enroll in a class or book a session.

Mommy and Me

Now that you have more of an understanding of what Reiki is, I will share a little bit more about my experience. During the class, we practice directing energy, doing full body sessions on people, learning to intone where the pain is, and even sending energy long distance to heal people anywhere in the world.  I discovered during our practice that I am highly intuitive.  Now, my Mother has been trying to tell me this for years, but as an avid lover of Ghost Whisperer, Medium, and other books/movies/tv on psychics, I have to admit I never envied their "gift."  Who wants to be able to read people, commune with ghosts, and predict the future.  Sheesh!  Ok, so maybe I haven't developed all those skills, but these things do expand as you expand.  I did learn that I am pretty good at reading people, and what I mean by that is that when I focus on a person, sometimes images, colors, thoughts pop into my head.  When I've share those with the person I've "read", most often I have been on target.  Ok, so that's kind of neat, tad bit freaky, but comes in handy, especially in the dating world, right? LOL

Fairly tame, so far, but THEN, during my attunement (where you get the Reiki "download" so to speak) I had the coolest experience; I met my Spirit Guides.  Now, those of you who knew me when, so to speak, know that I used to proudly spout Atheist propaganda, and rolled my eyes in disgust at all those crazy Christian girls out there.  Obviously, things have changed a bit.  I've grown and expanded my Spiritual self, step by step, during these cancer years, and it's an ongoing process.  Spirit Guides, definitely a big step.  They came to me one by one, almost like a Picture Slideshow.  I saw my primary guides, a gorgeous blonde hanging out in a field of butterflies and a man in a top hat with a snake.  Several other minor guides appeared very quickly, and then I saw several totem animals pass by, so cool.  I've definitely never experienced anything quite like it before, and quite frankly I'm still adjusting.  Anyway, definitely a great experience, and I will go further into Spirit Guides and Animal Totems in a future blog.

Since then, I've slowly started to open myself to more possibilities, but when it comes to the Spiritual stuff, I'm a baby stepper.  I've had a few more experiences, even met a ghost; it's definitely been life altering.

Well, there is always more to share, but for now, be grateful, create your own love list, eat lots of carrots, and think about exploring the world of energy healing.

One last thing....
I'm putting together a list of people who may need a little healing.  If you would like to be included, or know someone you'd like to include, let me know.  I have a little Reiki box with names and circumstances, and I plan on sending a little Reiki to those people each day.  Don't be shy, you might not feel a thing, but maybe it will brighten your day just a bit.

Let me know what you think, comments make me happy! :)

Energy Medicine

Recently I started seeing a local healer who uses the methods created by Donna Eden.  Donna is a very courageous and inspiring woman.  Born with a heart murmur and metabolic problems, she soon developed tuberculosis.  As a child she had severe hypoglycemia and allergies; by age 16 she suffered from Multiple Sclerosis.  At 27 she had a heart attack, suffered from asthma in her 30's, had a near fatal insect bite at age 33 and developed breast cancer at age 34.  More than one doctor told her to get her affairs in order.  Instead of giving up, Donna, who had been able to see energy her entire life, used her gift to understand how her body worked.  She started experimenting with various techniques and watched the effect these "exercises" had on her energy field.  She learned how to balance her chakras and meridians and eventually healed herself.  She's now in her late 60's, and tours the world sharing her healing techniques.

I've been doing her "Daily Energy Routine" for about three weeks now and have noticed a burst in energy.  It's a really simple routine that anyone can do.  The exercises in the routine are designed to restore energy, strengthen the immune system, focus the mind, sharpen memory, expel toxic energies and protect the body from negative energies.  Here's a video of the daily routine:

Kim (my local healer) is also very intuitive and had some interesting reflections during my last visit.  She told me that she felt that in a past life I experienced a great love, one for the storybooks.  When my soul returned to experience this life, it eventually realized the other soul was not here.  The disappointment was such that my soul no longer wanted to continue life on this plane.  Isn't that interesting.  She also feels that my ying and yang are out of whack and I need to get down my my feminine self.  So, I've taken up knitting.  I'm definitely still a beginner, but just you wait, I'll be making sweaters and scarves in no time!

Kim's final message concerned the mother of all my tumors, I call her Faith (yes, I named my tumors), the original instigator, located in the left side of my neck.  This tumor is still stuck on the original programming; helping my soul exist this would.  She refuses to budge.  Kim feels that if I can eliminate Faith, the others will loose their enthusiasm and dissolve quickly.  This really resonated with me.  I've thought a lot about possible solutions.  One option is surgery, however, considering they refused to remove the tumor when I was originally diagnosed, whose to say they will do it now.  My second option is to really connect with Faith, spend time reassuring her that I no longer need her and it's ok to let go.  This may seem silly, but each cell in our body has it's own intelligence and prime directive and we are the master controller.  Many people have healed by communicating loving with their bodies.  There are some specific techniques, such as Soul Language, Ho'oponopono, gratitude exercises, mirror work and Reiki.  I plan on giving these methods a chance, for at least thirty days, and then decide whether or not to look into surgery.  I would prefer not to have to go that route, but will do as I must to heal.

(Note:  I just looked in the mirror and tried to take a picture of the tumor, and it was TOO SMALL TO SHOW UP!!! It's definitely still pronounced, but much flatter than a few days ago!! I will continue sending healing and releasing thoughts and would appreciate any from my dear friends and readers. Thank you)

Healing With Energy Psychology

In my last entry I discussed how emotions play a large role in healing the body.  I discussed forgiveness, mirror work and affirmations.  There are many techniques for releasing trapped emotions and healing the body.  This new field of study is called Energy Psychology.  My Mom wrote a great lense on Squidoo on this very topic.  http://www.squidoo.com/energy-psychology  I personally have had great success with both Resonance Repatterning (formerly known as Holographic Repatterning) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

Shortly after my cancer diagnosis I researched several energy psychology techniques.  I connected the strongest with Resonance Repatterning, a technique that essentially helps clear out subconscious patterns that interfere with your life.  I scheduled sessions with local Kansas City practitioner Bobbie Martin.   http://www.bobbiemartin.com/

During the my first session we discovered a pattern that attracted slimy, wannabe rapists my way.  Subconsciously I had decided that this kind of attention was all I could obtain and all that I deserved.  Because of this I was missing out on the opportunity to meet a nice guy.  I was 24 years old at the time, never been in a relationship, and had been molested, stalked, harassed, and assaulted repeatedly for the past twenty years.  After my first repatterning session, I went to Best Buy to purchase a CD and was approached by a very polite gentleman, who complimented me and gave me his telephone number.  No creepy comeons, inappropriate touching, didn't threaten to stalk or attack me, he simply smiled, gave me his information, and walked away.  I was ecstatic!! I'd never had such a wonderful and positive experience with a man before, and just one hour after being repatterned!  Three months later I entered into a relationship with a wonderful man that I had the opportunity to date for almost three years.  Amazing isn't it?  I highly recommend this technique; it changed my life.

EFT is another great technique.  The nice thing about this method is that you can do it at home, in the shower, the car, pretty much anywhere.  Essentially, you "tap" on certain acupressure points in order to release blocked emotions.  There are tons of videos to follow along to on many different topics on YouTube.  You can also check out some of these links for tips on EFT:
