31 Things Before I Turn 31: #24 Take the "No TV for 30 Days" Challenge

After getting out of the hospital, I got into a major creative kick and didn't turn on the computer for a couple of weeks. Then I realized, hey, one of my challenges is to go 30 Days without TV, summer shows are ending, most of the Fall shows don't start for two weeks, lets finish this thing. What an amazing experience! It really wasn't difficult, especially with my creative juices flowing and the weather turning so nice. I admit that I do enjoy chillin' to a good TV show, but I find that sometimes watching TV becomes a way to ignore the other things in our lives. Watching a show or two a night, or a few times a week, no big deal, but spending your whole day/evening with the TV, that's just not healthy. I also learned that there are still some shows that I watch more out of habit rather than enjoyment, and I didn't even miss them. So those got deleted. I will slowly catch up with the rest, maybe have a few marathons, plus there are new shows I want to check out. But really, if you don't look forward to it, what's the point? So what did I do instead?

  1. Go out on Ladies Date Nights with friends. During this time I went to Eden's Alley, Accurso's, and the Bluebird and had some other friend time in between.
  2. I meditated more.
  3. I started journaling daily and even purchased some inspirational books. It's been really great.
  4. I spent time outside just reading or soaking in the sun.
  5. I spent time going to dinner and movies with my parents.
  6. I went up to various coffee shops and just read or did some writing.
  7. I wrote a ton of Squidoo lenses.
  8. I kept up with my blog, and did some design updates
  9. I read
  10. I did a few things off my 31 Things list, including organizing my photos, decluttering,  and some baking.
  11. I did MOPA sessions 3x a week, Resonance Repatterning, and Colonics.
  12. I focused on healing my body.
  13. I took naps
  14. I made music playlists
  15. I did some cooking, wrote a new casserole recipe, baked some blondies and my delicious pasta salad
  16. I started back with Soldiers Angels and got my first lady soldier name this week

Overall it was a great experience. I really didn't even want to start watching again, but I wanted to eat something that involved both hands, and the new Sarah Michelle Gellar show "Ringer" started tonight. So I thought, what the heck? I enjoyed the show, but had no desire to watch any other TV. TV should be a form of entertainment, not a way to zoom out or my Mom and I will get into these conversations where she'll be backed up 2-3 episodes of some show and she's like "I should just sit down and watch them" and you know what, I used to feel that way too, but how stupid it that. It's not a chore, if you don't look forward to it, then what's the point. There are shows that I like that maybe once I start watching, I do enjoy it, but I have decided that if I'm not going to force anything, if it's an episode by episode show, and you get backed up, skin the damn thing already! Plus, you know you have those shows that you've watched for several seasons, and really, you don't care anymore, but it's part of what you watch. Delete it from your DVR; simple don't let your DVR record that show anymore, and see if you miss it. If you don't forget about it!

Best of Existing's Tricky 2010

I can't believe it's been eight months since I started this blog.  Here is a list of personal favorite posts of 2010!

The Ego's job is to create fear and control, but sometimes a book or experience, quote, or friend can help us kick that Ego to the curb and get in touch with our inner guidance system. The message I received will enable me to kick this healing into high gear.

Drug companies push dangerous shots that contain mercury and other nastiness. A few simple holistic remedies will help you maintain health, even through the winter flu season.

One of the biggest questions I am asked is "How do you get your protein if you are not eating meat? There are many sources of protein for vegetarians, including nuts, seeds and dark leafy vegetables. This article also covers which items are a complete source of protein, meaning they contain all essential amino acids.

This is one of the most important lessons I've learned this year. I've experience so much healing by using this simple tool. I know it will help you as well.

Louise Hay is a brilliant woman who healed her own cancer through the use of affirmations.

Most people have the desire to improve their health, increase happiness and live better lives. However, most efforts fail because they don't know the steps to successfully implement change in their lives. Read, print, and follow these steps to create a healthier you.

This tool has been tremendous in opening myself to others. Often times those who affect us the most, are the ones we need to pay the most attention to. They are a reflection of something inside ourselves.

This three-part article details 17 different Superfoods that personally healed my issues with anemia, hypoglycemia, hormone imbalance, and have reduced the inflammation in my system, which in turn has reduced the cancer. This is one of the most important sources of information I've ever received.

I resisted, dug my heels in, crossed my arms, and shouted "I don't wanna" in my little kid voice, year after year.  This year I finally relented, and realized what a beautiful gift Reiki is. This is my story.

It is so difficult to explain diet and lifestyle changes to our loved ones. Often times people become defensive, and in turn, we can have a superior attitude. This list of tips will help you co-exist with those still on a SAD (Standard American Diet).

I have been using the Law of Attraction for a few years now and I'm telling you, it works.  This is a list of my favorite tools to aid you in implementing the Law in your life.

I have used many different energy psychology techniques.  In this article I discuss some of my earliest successes, which have lead to incredible healing.

Kris Carr originally posted this challenge on her blog CrazySexyLife.  In this article I provide tips on reducing TV in your life, how to fill in all the extra time, and challenge you to take a 30 day break from the boob tube.

In Gabrielle Bernstein's wonderful book Add More ~Ing to Your Life: The Hip Guide to Happiness, she discusses how we sometimes make our intimate relationships "special", which can lessen our own loving relationship with ourselves.

Self love is so important.  Enjoy this beautiful post filled with tips, quotes and pictures to help you create a loving relationship with your self.

Balancing the Mind

This month I've been terribly out of balance.  Actually, if I'm really honest with myself, I've been out of balance for a long time.  I snapped a bit a few weeks ago, when I realized how caught up I was in The Attack of the Should's.  Since then I've done a lot of fictional reading, very little in the healing department, a tad bit of writing and pretty zero socially.  Monday, I woke up and decided, screw Facebook, Squidoo, Twitter, Blogging, Email, chores, etc., today I'm going to do all those things I desire, but never have the time for.  I started out with a killer Superfood Smoothie, did a Ho'oponono meditation, a prayer meditation I'd borrowed from my Mom in July, rebounder, practiced yoga for the first time in two years, got out my Oracle Cards, walked Triton, did a full body Reiki session on myself and set up a Girls Date Night.  Guess what?  I still had time to write, play on the Internet, watch TV, read and whatever else I might have wanted to do.  Which tells me that we are capable of accomplishing all the things we desire, we just have to prioritize and balance ourselves.

I've always been a pretty left brained person; I crave order, discipline, schedule, etc.  However, lately I've been more right brained, free wheeling, creative, no real order or schedule.  Balance is finding that middle ground.  I need some stable things in my life, but maybe i can be flexible in the when and how, or switch it up when creativity strikes or new opportunities come up.  This is something we could all benefit from.

Meditation, yoga and rebounding are all great tools for balancing one's self.  Incorporating one or more into your day will help stabilize and balance you out.  When you get up in the morning, look in the mirror and say "I love myself and I am balanced."  You can also do affirmations while rebounding; it's powerful and fun! Balancing our energy is also extremely important.  If your energy meridians are crossed, it can throw you out of wack.  Check out Donna Eden's 5 Minute Energy Routine for balancing your energy.

What do you do to regain Balance?

P.S. Cutting down on TV will free so much time, check out the No TV for 30 Days Challenge for tips on cutting back on your TV viewing.

No TV for 30 Days Challenge

Recently Crazy Sexy Cancer chic Kris Carr release a challenge based on a blog by Skinny Bitch Diva Rory Freeman Giving Up TV . While this may seem daunting to most people, I'd like you to take a moment and do a couple of things for yourself.

1. Add up all the hours you watch TV each week.  How many TV shows do you watch?  Do you watch the commercials?  News?  Random flipping?  Have a number yet? Good.
2. Take that number and divide by seven.  This will give you an average daily viewing time.
3. Now ad up how many hours you sleep, work and eat. Subtract this number from 24 and you'll get the number of hours on average you have each day to exercise, attend your kid's activities, socialize, read, enjoy a hobby, have some "me" time, etc.  Then take that "free time" number and subtract your daily TV viewage. Think about it, is this number "big enough" to fit all of the things you want to accomplish?  Do you feel like you "never have enough time" to do what you have to do?
4. First, things first, cut out the News.  This will create a HUGE opening for joy if you eliminate this one program.  The world will continue spinning, regardless of how many murders, rapes, wars and crisis are reported.  Mentally and emotionally, the News is draining, and shouldn't be a daily focus.  Also, reality shows are simply gossip mills.  Eliminate those life suckers.  Check out my blog post Peace, Love and Happiness for a refresher on how going on a Media diet and eliminating gossip can create Peace.
5. I want you to envision all the shows you watch, and recall how you feel during each broadcast.  Any of your scripted programs leave you feeling a little sick, frightened, angry, dirty, shameful, guilty, depressed, disgusted by the world? CUT THEM OUT!!!
6. What is your TV viewing number now?  Could you reduce it further?  Are there shows you watch out of habit, simply because you've watched all the seasons, but truly don't enjoy anymore?  Cut them.

Look at all the free time you have now!! If you choose to continuing watching TV, focus on shows that inspire, make you laugh, are uplifting, bring you joy.  If you are interested in tackling the challenge, or maybe want to try cutting out TV for a day or a week, just to start, follow it on twitter #notvfor30days.

Now, what to do with all the extra time....

Knit, crochet, Yoga, read to kids in the cancer ward at the hospital, meditate, read a book, join Meetup, start a blog, adopt a pet, Soduku, jigsaw puzzles, plant a garden, visit a museum, go to the park, attend the ballet, exercise, go camping, dance in your living room, take Tango lessons, learn something new, draw a self portrait, meet your Spirit Guides, journal, listen to podcasts, send letters to friends, become a Soldier penpal, volunteer at an orphanage, clean out the basement, learn Reiki, attend a spiritual service, create your own Vision Board, go to the Symphony, play with a child, visit your parents, write a poem, learn an instrument
