Ode to Yes and Yes

So right around the holiday's I purchase the 2012 Yes and Yes calendar. I had the 2011 and LOVED it, so why not? Sarah, the delightful woman behind the blog Yes and Yes sent me a message on Twitter asking for a review. Of course(!) I replied, only to fail miserably. Sadly, it timed out during my week of fatigue where I basically slept for 10 days. After, I simply just didn't do it. I truly LOVE this blog, and it's been the inspiration for so many things. This is where the 31 Things Before I Turn 31 project came from. So here's my Ode, a way to say, sorry for being a bum, and girly, love you.

The Calendar

First things first, the calendar. This pic comes from last years calendar. I found it incredibly inspiring and fun. When I took it down, I didn't want to throw it away, so it will be part of my Vision Board.

The new calendar is larger, and just as fantastic. On the backside of each month is a project, such as an outline for a postcard, so you can send it to a friend, questions about goals, etc. The calendar itself has all the regular holidays (i.e. Martin Lurther King, Easter, Fourth of July, etc.) but in addition some of the days have little tips such as "Go to the movies by yourself" or "Write a friend", "Meet for a late-night date."

Even though we are halfway through January, I still recommend ordering a calendar. The advice and projects alone are worth the price. Be inspired.

31 Things Before I Turn 31

I first read about this project about a year and a half ago. I thought it sounded fantastic and created my 30 Things list. I was halfway to 30 at that point, but still had a lot of fun with it. This year I've learned so much from this project and I'm already looking ahead to my 32 Things. In fact, I've been so inspired that just this past week I created a new blog called My Birthday Bucket List, that will go over all my goals, updates on how I'm doing, posts on completed projects, etc. Please check it out and sign up to be a follower. I love reading Sarah's posts; it's just such a clever idea!

The Blog

So what can I say? I LOVE LOVE LOVE this blog! There is so much variety from advice columns to travel guides, interviews with people who've had unique experiences, inspiration and of course Sarah's bucket list posts. Not to mention her Network of Nice. Here are some posts that I have enjoyed.

From the Yes and Yes Website

about

Yes and Yes is a lifestyle blog created and written by Sarah Von (who finds talking about herself in third person pretentious and weird). I created Yes and Yesbecause I wanted to read a blog that was funny, smart and offered varied content.

And by 'varied content' apparently I meant posts about cat outfits. And haikus about Brazilian waxes. And instructions on how to become a grown up.

I couldn't find a blog like that (maybe I didn't look hard enough?) so I just started one myself. I also wanted to read something that addressed the many, many aspects of modern life and didn't pigeon-hole women into different camps.Fancy, high-paid CEOs might want to  read about low-cost volunteer-based traveland hippie girls might want to read about cute, over-priced underwear. Moms might want to read about the travails of online dating and college girls might want to learn about throwing theme parties. Why not put all that stuff on one site?

Also? I lack the attention span to limit myself to one topic.

Ultimately, Yes and Yes is about living the life that works for you and saying 'yes' to the things that make you happy.

I'm Sarah Von. It's nice to meet you!

passage of time, but really I'm thinking about how I want a latte.

Oooooh, what's this a metaphor for?

My New Blogs

Last night I realized that some of the things I want to discuss in 2012 really doesn't fit the format of Existing's Tricky. This blog is designed to discuss my healing journey, nutrition, radical self love, etc. So I've created a few new blogs and I'd appreciate if you'd check them out! Don't worry, I will continue to post as regular on Existing's Tricky.

Embracing Miracles
This blog will follow my Spiritual Journey as I read and practice the lessons in A Course of Miracles, continue growing as a Spirit Junkie, spiritual book reviews, etc.

Enlightened by Reading
I've joined and started several 2012 Book Challenges and this blog will be the reviews of everything I read.

My Birthday Bucket List
Remember my 31 Things List? Well this will go more in depth on my journey to achieve those things, plus of course my new list come March 29th!

Please sign up to be a follower, post on Facebook, Twitter, post comments, and let me know what you think!

30 Day Photography Challenge

I found this on Pinterest and thought it looked fun. I'm starting it December 1st-December 30th. There are a couple ones on here that I have no idea how I would accomplish, so I'll just do something else those days. I'll post pics as I go. Anyone want to join in? Let me know and be sure to link to any posts you make in my comments!

My Favorite Blogs I Follow

I follow a lot of blogs and enjoy most of them quite a bit. I do have a few that consistently either provide good information, inspiration, tasty recipes, laughter, etc. Here are some of my favorites:

Gala Darling
Gala is a unique soul. Her blog originated as a fashion blog, as while she is still very much a fashionista, she is very into Radical Self Love. She has a weekly post called "Things I Love Thursdays" which many bloggers have taken up and added to their own blog. She has a podcast and workshop that teach you how to love yourself. She has also written an ebook that covers anything from self love, living in New York, how to make money blogging, etc. It's called Love and Sequins and is broken into 12 chapters, which you can either buy individually or all together.

The Perks of Having  Cancer
This is a blog I just recently discovered and really appreciate her humor. She writes fairly short posts with titles such as "Perk #27 Cancer Has Made Even My Most Embarassing Moment Seem Trivial.", "Perk #23 Cancer Has Made Me Grateful For My Chores" and my favorite "#20 I Don't Have to Worry About Guests Finding a Hair in the Food I Prepared." As someone going through cancer themselves, it nice to find someone who is focused on the bright side.
 ,
Almost Vegan
This blog is written by another local Kansas City gal and includes raw food recipes, product reviews, restaurants review and much more.

Green Beans and Yam
This blog is written by a young couple who recently went vegan and they write about their experiences, making vegan food for their family, etc. There is also a lot of info on yoga, mental and emotional health. Basically, we are following them on their path as they grow and heal their bodies, mind and spirit.

Hyperbole and a Half
Just read it. Trust me. Basically, funny stories with crazy drawings of her life. Rumor has it there is a book coming out next year.

Life is a Canvas
This blog covers Etsy and Pinterest finds, recipes, inspirational quotes, creative projects, book reviews, etc.

Sarah Wilson
Sarah Wilson is a reporter from Australia, who blogs about everything under the sun including the importance of riding your bike, quitting sugar, her interviews with celebrities such as Louise Hay and the Dalai Lama and everything in between.

The Grateful Life
30 year old who posts an experience or something nearly daily that she is grateful for. Very inspiring.

The Wellness Warrior
This blog is written by yet another Aussie who is going through her second bout of cancer. She is about 30. She did chemo and the whole bit the first time, but it came back just a few years later. I believe she has some kind of thyroid cancer, but it has metastasized into one of her arms. They wanted to cut off the arm, so she no way, and discovered the Gerson Therapy. This therapy has been around for 70 years or so, is illegal is the United States, but they have a healing center in Mexico or some place like that. She blogs about a variety of health issues and of course how her therapy is going. Recently, her Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, so now they are both on the program. She has a pretty powerful story, and I love her writing. She also has a couple of ebooks, one on Detoxing, and a new one on Eating the Gerson Way for the Holidays. Amazing.

Yes and Yes
Finally, another favorite that explores a ton of topics. She travels quite a bit, and blogs a lot about her experiences. She also has a series of travel guide posts that I really enjoy. She is the one who came up with creating a list of items to do before your birthday; I project many bloggers have taken on including myself. She'll post the occasional recipe, random thoughts, videos, any topic is up for grabs. She releases a yearly calendar (I have the 2011 one) that has original artwork with inspirational quotes and fun remarks throughout the month. Highly recommend.

As I said I follow many blogs, and several new ones in the last month that may join the favorites list; I just haven't gotten to know them well yet.

2011 Intentions and 21 Day Adventure Cleanse

I've read several articles debating on the importance of New Year's Resolutions.  This year I've put together a list of "intentions" for the year, things that I feel are doable and will help my continued growth.

  • I intend to create a daily practice of yoga, meditation and journaling
  • I intend to drink at least one Green Smoothie daily
  • I intend to do 35 minutes or more of cardio exercise at least 4 times a week, this includes dog walking, rebounder, etc.
  • I intend to focus on growing my blog this year, including number of followers, investing in SEO program, creating regular posts and updating the look
  • I intend to write and publish my first book
  • I intend to focus on my Spiritual practice, which could include taking classes at the Rime  Buddhist Center, increasing my meditation practice, Spiritual reading, prayer, and creating my own Sacred Space.
  • I intend to start the year with a 21 Day Adventure Cleanse, and do mini-cleanses throughout the year
  • I intend to continue to build and grow my friendships and schedule at least one social outing each week
  • I intend to attend a Vipssanna meditation retreat as part of my healing and Spiritual growth
  • I intend to take a vacation this year, location TBA

Yesterday I started my 21 Day Adventure Cleanse.  Unlike a lot of cleanses, you are encouraged to eat as much as needed to be satisfied, as long as the meals fit the parameter of the diet.  I am abstaining from all coffee, gluten, animal products, and sugar.  The focus is on fresh vegetables and fruits, either raw or steamed, nuts and seeds, rice, and healthy grains.  The cleanse also encourages daily exercise, meditation, and the utilization of detox tools such as the Neti Pot and Dry Skin Brushing.  Once a week there is a fast, only fresh juice, smoothies and tea.  This day of rest allows the body to really eliminate toxins.  I have been journaling my experience and will post recipes and my progress as I continue through the 21 Days.

What are your Intentions for 2011?

Vegan Freak: Being Vegan in a Non-Vegan World

Changing any aspect of our current lifestyle is exciting, scary, stressful and challenging.  Having a strong support system is very important when going through any new process.  Often times though, society does not respond positively to our new change.  Co-workers, friends, family usually have their own opinion of your decision, and sometimes it can be disheartening.  However, it's important to remember that in most case, this resistance comes from a place of love.  Generally, the people in our lives want us to be happy and healthy.  New vegetarians often receive a lot of resistance, and negative feedback when first making the dietary change.  Remember, it's not you with the issue, it's them.  Getting defensive or putting others on the defense will only make the situation worse.  Here are some tips for dealing and creating a positive relationship with your non-vegetarian peers.

1. It's Not You, It's Them.  Meaning, you are are not responsible for how others respond to your lifestyle choice.  Be confident in your decision, but don't get defensive or snide when criticized.  In most cases people either simply do not understand your choice, are concerned about you getting all the proper nutrients, are concerned about how difficult it will make life for you, and more important how difficult your decision will make life for THEM.  Also, sometimes people feel like they are being judged, like they are the bad guy for continuing to consume meat products.  Be understanding, don't take it personally, and communicate with them.  Share that you made this choice for weight loss, health reasons, ethics, etc.

2. Let Them Come To You.  It's easy in the beginning to be so excited about your new venture, and how it makes you feel, to become a pusher.  A lot of new vegetarians want to share all the new amazing benefits, talk about the ill treatment of animals ad naseum, lecture people on what's "really" in the food, etc.  While it's tempting to do this, and while all this information may be true, people do not like to be pushed.  The more you push, the more they will resist and the more difficult things will be in your relationship.  Let them come to you.  Once they see that your skin is clearing up, you are loosing weight, your veggie risotto looks fab compared to what they ordered, people will come to you and ask "What is it that you've been doing, you look fantastic!"  This gives you the opening to share your new vegan ideals in an open and friendly manner, where the person will be more receptive to what you have to say.

3. Volunteer to Bring a Dish to Family Gatherings.  One of the reasons people resist your change to vegetarianism is that they have no clue what to feed you when you come over.  Help them out, bring a dish, and for goodness sake, not a simple salad.  Bring a nut loaf, risotto, vegetarian casserole, etc.  Show them there is more to being a vegetarian as lettuce, and at the same time you will relieve their stress over what to feed you.

4. Throw a Smoothie Party.  Instead of a wine and cheese affair, have a smoothie party!! I had a friend who did this a few years ago and it was a great deal of fun.  We had martini glasses, and she made 5-6 different green and superfood smoothies throughout the night.  It was a great way to sample different smoothie flavors and gossip and have some girly time.  She also invited someone who sold Superfood products who talked for a little bit and promoted their products.  It was kind of like going to a product party in that respect as well.  Have fun with it, be creative! Check out this site for some incredible recipe ideas: Green Smoothies

5. Join a Local Meetup Group.  The best way to feel comfortable in your new lifestyle is to find other vegetarians to share with.  Meetup is a great place to find local vegetarian, vegan, healthy living and raw food groups.  Just put in your zip code and it will show you a list of active groups in your area.  Making vegetarian friends is very helpful in feeling good about your path and sticking to it.

6. Have a Vegan Potluck.  Invite your friends over for a potluck and game night.  Ask everyone to bring a vegan dish and encourage them to get creative and have fun with it!  Veg Web is a great site where users post their own recipes, people can comment and rate them, and usually there are pictures.  Send out an evite, include this link, and make it a fun experience.  Potlucks are a great way to try new things and people usually feel pretty good about the success of their dish.

7. Bring Vegan Treats to the Workplace.  Make some fun cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, etc.  Pass them out at work (don't tell people they are vegan), let them oooh and awww over your creation, then let them in on the secret.  Desserts are a great way to win people over and get them to appreciate your lifestyle.

8. Communicate With Your Waiter.  Chances are, you will still be expected to go to restaurants that may not be too veg friendly in social situations.  Don't be afraid to ask for what you want.  In this day and age, restaurants have to be accommodating.  Think about all the people with food allergies, celiac's disease, lactose intolerant, etc.  Restaurants are used to receiving special requests.  I've read a few vegetarian and raw food books where the author suggested creating food cards, listing every ingredient you will eat.  It sounds silly, but sometimes it is easier than attempting to explain your diet to someone not trained to understand veganism.  Simply hand the card to the waiter, and ask the chef to create something for you based on your list.  You could also ask for a salad, and have them put every single vegetable at their disposal in it.  Most of the time restaurants have very basic salads, and often times chicken is the main ingredient.  However, if you peruse the menu, you will find that many of the meals will contain vegetables not found in the salad.  You can get a pretty amazing salad this way.  One time, on vacation, my Dad and I went to a chain restaurant, and we explained to the waiter that I had cancer and was on a very special diet with vegetables (raw or steamed) and some grains.  The chef made me an amazing veggie risotto dish, and ladies and gentlemen, that restaurant did not have anything like that on the menu.

9. Take a Cooking Class with a Family Member.  Who's the cook in your family?  Ask them if they would be willing to attend a vegetarian cooking class with you.  Again, a lot of the resistance you may find from family is their fear that they won't be able to accommodate you.  This is a fun way to help ease their fear and will give you two something to do together.

10. Make Dinner for Your Family.  Holiday's are tricky times for vegetarians.  How about inviting your family over for a pre-holiday meal?  Make them a fabulous dinner that will show them that you are being responsible and properly balancing your meal, that what you are eating is tasty and healthy.  This will bring them into your new world and ease some of the fears they may have about your new lifestyle.

11. Take Your Family/Friends to a Vegetarian Restaurant.  There are a lot of fantastic vegetarian restaurants out there, and usually they create creative meals that also appeal to meat eaters.  My favorite restaurant in Kansas City is Eden Alley, a wonderful cozy little place that offers a variety of vegetarian meals.  I've been taking my friends and family there for years and everyone always loves it.

12.  Start a Blog.  Blog about your journey.  Share with people why you made the decision, the challenges you have faced, the benefits you've seen, the facts and figures, recipes, etc.  Bring people into your world.

As you start to blossom, look and feel better and gain confidence in your decision, people will be more open and supportive.  Follow some or all of these tips and I guarantee you will win your friends and family over in no time.  Don't expect them to follow in your footsteps, that is not the goal.  The goal is to be supported and surrounded by positive influences.  Good luck on your vegetarian journey!
